The Psychology of Game Design

Driving Question: How do the principles of psychology shape the way games are designed to influence player behavior and engagement?

In this “Wildcard” Pillar project, students will delve into the intersection of psychology and game design, exploring how psychological principles are used to create compelling and engaging gaming experiences. This niche project invites students to analyze various game mechanics, player motivations, and the ways in which games can influence behavior and decision-making.

Students will study key psychological concepts such as reward systems, habit formation, and the role of narrative in shaping player experiences. They’ll engage with game designers and psychologists, conduct experiments on player behavior, and design their own game prototypes that incorporate these psychological principles. The project will culminate in a presentation where students showcase their findings and demonstrate how understanding psychology can lead to more engaging and impactful games.
